What School Counselors Do:
· We are the counselors for every student (IEP’s, 504’s, or general education)
· We will develop programming (groups, class presentations, awareness campaigns, etc) to try and meet the needs of our students.
· We will try to discern what would most efficiently and effectively meet that student’s need (i.e. individual meetings with us, referral to outside counselor, group work, etc)
· We will be available to meet individually with students to work on skill building
[emotional issues (anger, self-esteem, depression, anxiety, etc), abuse issues, self-harm issues, chronic conflict. However, as school counselors we focus on support in the school environment, we will also refer students and families to outside resources when necessary and/or appropriate.
· We will be available to meet with students in crisis. There will be “crisis mode” for students from time to time. However, our goal is to get to the point that we are equipping students before crisis mode comes. We can be much more effective if we can work with students when they are calm and not in the midst of crisis.
· We will support students in three main areas: personal/social, academic, career.
What School Counselors Don’t Do:
· Handle discipline issues. Instead, we will support Mrs. Diaz-Avery and Mr. LaBounty in this.
Example: we might work with a student who seems to have reoccurring anger issues or reoccurring issues with making poor choices.
· “Fix kids” :)
· Meet with all students in need individually. Some issues are simply a better fit for a community counselor or a group of students. Anything that is a long term need, we will likely partner with the family and community and refer out so that we can serve all students at TMS.
